StyleBlazer Approved: Our 15 Favorite Natural Hair Divas (Inside: Oprah’s Stylist is Anti Kinky Hair)

Oprah can do no wrong in our book but her longtime hairstylist, Andre Walker, recently received the scorn of many women when he made comments about natural hair that left us scratching our heads. During an interview with Elle magazine he said the following in regards to managing hair on a hot, humid day:

“I always recommend embracing your natural texture. Kinky hair can have limited styling options; that’s the only hair type that I suggest altering with professional relaxing.”

Besides contradicting himself (he says embrace embrace your texture and then suggests you alter it in the next sentence), Walker’s just wrong. Textured hair can be worn a variety of ways from fros to blow outs to locs to springy curls. Though some women choose to rock relaxers or weaves (and there’s nothing wrong with that), we salute the sistahs
who keep it fly and natural.

…the boy has got it ALL WRONG! Our BEAUTIFUL TRESSES stand in a LEAGUE of its own! No other ethnic group of people have what we have when it comes to our BEAUTIFUL TRESSES!!! And it’s so sad for someone in his ‘position of influence’ to speak so NEGATIVE about our hair. And it’s no mystery why so many beautiful Black women ‘jump ship’ in discovering what a GIFT from God of our BEAUTIFUL hair. It’s so sad that they opt instead to hiding their hair under a weave, and never realizing how beautiful their tresses really are … “a woman’s HAIR is her CROWN OF GLORY.” … NOTE: as soon as WOMEN from other ethnic groups figure out how to get an afro, etc., then some Black women will EMBRACE what God has GIFTED us with!!! so sad!!!

How could Andre say something like that? But, I guess we could believe that, not like Oprah's rocked an afro in the past 20 years. AND in his little 'hair typing book' he claims that black women's hair can't grow long unless chemically 'treated' or locked in dreadlocks. Smh. I honestly don't give a hoot what he says. He's just another self-hating bigot to me.
