For the two collections, called Comme des Carrés, Kawakubo plans to build on the artful prints characteristic of Hermés’ silk scarves “by adding elements” and “combining them with abstract images,” Kawakubo told WWD.
The carré, or silk scarf, became a trademark of Hermés since its introduction into the luxury label’s offered goods back in 1937. The scarves are famous for their elaborate production process, which has included the sourcing of raw Chinese silk, designs which take years to develop, individual screen printing, and lengthy dying processes spanning months.
Though she is no stranger to high-end collaborations, it will be interesting to see what the designer—whose label is famously known for distressing—fashion’s for the polished French brand.
Rei Kawakubo’s collections of Hermés carrés will be called Noir et Blanc and Couleur, and will respectively feature 5 abstract black and white scarves; and 6 colorful patterned scarves reminiscent of traditional Hermés carré prints hybridized with Kawakubo’s own additions.
The Comme des Carrés collections are expected to hit select Commes des Garçon stores in early February of 2013.
