You may not be familiar with Luke James, but if he has his way, he’ll be a household name this time next year. The Grammy nominated singer is poised to become one of the biggest names in soul music with incredible buzz and A-list support. It’s not every day that an emerging soul talent gets the accolades of legendary entertainers like Stevie Wonder and Beyoncé. The stylish soulster takes cues from throwback muses like Sidney Poitier and Marvin Gaye, with a sound that shines through the hip-hop & b that’s currently in radio rotation.
We caught up with Luke after his NYC show last week at SOB’s, and he dished on his Grammy nomination, the inspiration behind his latest video and why 2013 is his year. And of course, he made us blush. Get to know this charmer!
StyleBlazer: Congratulations on your Grammy nomination. Where were you when you heard that news?
Luke James: I was on my way to an album listening party for Stacy Barthe when I heard the news. And I was bombarded by a whole bunch of congratulations from all types of people: from my lawyer, from my NARS team, from John Legend, Miley Cyrus. It was awesome. It was a very surreal moment and I kind of just wanted to go home and go to sleep, and just kind of wake up… and be somewhere else and accept what’s going on. It was awesome.

SB: You definitely deserve it. Your new single “Make Love To Me” is written by Ne-Yo. How was it collaborating with him?
Luke James: He’s an amazing writer, and the song was brought to me by one of the execs at Def Jam. And I heard it and I loved it. It was in the vein of what I do naturally so it felt right. And I love music with a message, with feeling and great melody. And that’s what it was for me, so that’s why I recorded it. I heard myself on it.
