Sometimes the onscreen chemistry between co-stars is so magnetic it’s hard for viewers not to blur the line between reality and fiction. When the romance is electric between characters we often wish or believe that the actors portraying them were romantically involved in real life. The onscreen couples on this list were so believable that we could have sworn they dated off-screen. See which of your favorite TV and movie couples were only pretending.
Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel
Corey and Topanga…uh, I mean, Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel played the ultimate couple. They were together since childhood, and that’s exactly why the two didn’t end up dating. Ben Savage said in an online interview with 90sgirlproblem.com “You grow up with someone since the time you’re 11 years old, and you see each other go through some pretty awkward years, by the time you both hit 20, you don’t really want to date or anything.” So there you have it, folks. Corey and Topanga never were in real life. Hopes: dashed.
Tyrese Gibson and Taraji P. Henson
Without a doubt, Baby Boy is a favorite for many people in the African American community. Tyrese and Taraji’s characters mirrored perfectly the real-life relationship experience many have had. You know, the kind where you love someone so much that you hate them for all the crap you put up with? Their onscreen chemistry was on point, but Taraji set the record straight on the Wendy Williams Show that the two never dated. In fact, it is principle for her not to get romantically involved with her co-stars.
Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis
Justin and Mila played best friends with benefits so well it’s hard to imagine they didn’t have that chemistry off set. Well, the two are really good friends but that’s about it. Justin was dating his now wife Jessica Biel during the time of the film. Don’t you just hate it?
Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar
Ryan and Sarah starred as boyfriend and girlfriend in the 1997 film I Know What You Did Last Summer, and then as step-brother and sister with a twisted sexual relationship in the 1999 film Cruel Intentions. Naturally, you thought the two would end up together for real. Wrong! Gellar ended up dating and marrying Freddie Prinze Jr, who also starred in I Know What You Did Last Summer (in the film Freddie was paired with Jennifer Love Hewitt), and Ryan married his other Cruel Intentions co-star Resse Witherspoon.
George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez
The chemistry between these two in Out of Sight (1998) was so electric it made the hairs on your arm tingle, but the two never dated. We wonder why? Maybe the sparks didn’t fly off-screen.
Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs
These two played a mismatched couple in The Best Man and had crazy fire as reluctantly-in-love best friends in Brown Sugar, but as far as we know they never dated. It might be because Sanaa was already seeing her Love and Basket Ball co-star Omar Epps.
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio
You had to see this one coming. Jack and Rose were the quintessence of being young and in love. They were free together and explored each other’s worlds with fascination. There was no way two people could play that so well and not get together in real life, but guess what? Kate and Leo never got together in real life. They are more like brother and sister than anything, and Leo says they’ve “always just been completely platonic.”
Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds
These two goofy pals seem like they really enjoy each other’s company. They’ve been friends for over a decade and even co-starred in the romantic comedy The Proposal, but rumors of them being in love and planning a wedding were false. Sandy told Entertainment Tonight in 2011, that they were not romantically involved. Too bad; they say best friends make the best lovers.
Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley
Orlando admitted in a 2006 interview that Keira was a great kisser, but that’s as far as the romance went between the pair. By the way, at the time of filming the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie Keira was just 17-years-old. Maybe that’s why things didn’t go any further, and to that we say to Orlando, wise choice.
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone
Ryan and Emma were too adorable in Crazy Stupid Love. They had magic onscreen, but in real life the two are just good friends. Emma confessed in an interview that she “loves Ryan’s brain” and often runs her movie role decisions by him first because he has good insight. The pair is set to also star in the drama Gangster Squad due out January 2013.
Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas
These two were caliente onscreen! So caliente it made us jealous of Salma getting to play opposite such a beautiful man. Off screen, though, Antonio was busy courting his future wife Melanie Griffin.
Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley
They may play star-crossed lovers on the Vampire Diaries TV series, but a romance between these two would be a big No-No. Paul Wesley is married to actress Torrey DeVitto who also has a role on the show. Nina is currently dating the other Salvatore brother Damon, played by Ian Somerholder.
Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell
Martin and Gina were the heart and soul of Martin. There was rumor that the real life actors carried on relations during most of the show’s run, and even prior to it, since they were both in the House Party movies back in ’90’s, but when Tisha filed a sexual harassment suit against Martin, it ended the show and any hope of the two ever being together.
Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey
Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Lopez were so cute together in The Wedding Planner. Two beautiful people being beautiful together onscreen; it was beautiful. Surely they would date in real life, but no relationship ever emerged despite the fact that J.LO is known to hook up a lot with the men she works with.
Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman
Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman were so hot together in Swordfish, you wanted them to actually be together in real life, but no such luck. Jackman has been married since before he hit the big time, much to Halle’s disappointment and to ours. Boo.
