Celebrity Deaths of 2012: Stars We Said Goodbye To This Past Year

As 2012 comes to an end, it is time to reflect on all the happenings of the past 12 months. Some of it good and some of it bad, terrible some might even say. One of the worst things to reflect on is death and seeing all the amazing stars that left this world, some of them way too early. The music industry lost a lot of talent this past year with music icons to up-and-comers. Check out our list of Celebrity Deaths of 2012.

Whitney Houston

February 2012 was not a good year for the music industry. On the eve of the Grammy Awards, Whitney was found dead in her hotel room at the age of 48 years old. She may have had a rocky personal life fueled by drugs and alcohol, but Whitney was born with an amazing gift that was taken from this world way too early.

Don Cornelius

Don Cornelius shocked the world when he was found dead in his home in February. The Soul Train creator and host was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot to his head! He was 75 years old. He helped promote the careers of so many singers on his show, so his suicide was a shock to many. The fact that he was suffering from a medical condition does help to explain why he chose to end things though.

D1ck Clark

Mr. Clark was an iconic TV host and producer, who not only brought us American Bandstand, but was always with us on New Years Eve for the balldrop. He is a legend in the entertainment world. He passed away from a massive heart attack in April.

Donna Summer

When you think disco the one name that probably comes to your head is Donna Summer. She was the queen of the disco, with such hits as “Bad Girls” and “Hot Stuff.” The singer passed away from lung cancer in May at the age of 63, even though she was not a smoker.

Etta James

Etta James is famous for her song “At Last” and two weeks after her doctor announced that she was terminally ill, the diva passed away from complications from leukemia. She was 73 years old and will forever be remembered for that song that never gets old.

Chuck Brown

Chuck Brown was often referred to as the “Godfather of Go-Go,” which was a style of funk music. He was still playing music up until the end. He passed away from organ failures as a result of sepsis at the age of 75.

Herb Reed


Herb Reed was one of the founding fathers of the R&B crooners The Platters from the 1950’s. The Platters were known for some great hits, including The Great Pretender and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. He was the last of the founders to pass away. He died in June with several ailments at the age of 83.

Rodney King


Rodney King became famous after he was beat by cops in Los Angeles in 1992 and it was caught on tape. The beating started a riot in L.A. that killed 50 people. He maintained a spot in the limelight every now and then, but he passed away while in his swimming pool in June at the age of 47.

Michael Clarke Duncan

Michael Clarke Duncan was a fighter, even up until the very end. He suffered a heart attack in July and fought for a couple months, but passed away in September at the age of 54. He is best known for his role in The Green Mile.

Yvette Wilson


The actress and funny lady is best known for her roles on the hit UPN shows Moesha and The Parkers. She also hit the big screen with roles in Friday and House Party 2 and House Party 3. At just 48 years old, Yvette passed away from cervical cancer.

Sherman Hemsley

Sherman Hemsley was better known as George Jefferson on the hit shows All In The Family and The Jeffersons. He made several guest appearances throughout his career, but passed away in July at the age of 74 from a large mass on his lungs.

Adam Yauch

Adam Yauch is better known as MCA from the Beastie Boys. The rapper battled cancer for three years and finally lost that battle in May. Such a talent and lost to the world at just 47 years old.

Jenni Rivera

This is the most recent death and one of the most tragic. Jenni Rivera was a Mexican-American Grammy-nominated singer and she starred in her own reality show called I Love Jenni. She passed away on December 9 after the plane her and six others were traveling in crashed in northern Mexico.

Natina Reed


Natina Reed was a member of the R&B group Blaque and was one of the co-stars in the hit 2000 movie Bring It On. She had some run-ins with the law throughout her life, but still barreled through them all. She passed away in October at the age of 32 after being struck by a car in Atlanta. She was crossing the street and talking on her cell phone at the time.
