By now you’ve had time to digest the horrifying news: Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London home on Saturday at 3:54pm. The Back to Black soul-singer was only 27. Gone way too soon… Allegedly, Winehouse was ‘beyond help’ when paramedics arrived; sources are speculating drug overdose as the cause of death. Amy was gifted, troubled yes, but nonetheless a talented vocalist who paved the way for fellow British artists like Adele to go against the grain and make real music. Amy’s lyrics were raw, “when you walk in the bar, and you dressed like a star, rocking your F me pumps-never miss a night, cause your dream in life, is to be a footballers wife,” (F*** Me Pumps, Frank). Style original—you’d often find the 5-time Grammy award winner rocking a sky-high beehive, dramatic eye makeup and ratty threads—this was Amy’s signature look and we adore her originality. Family, friends and fans are left devastated.
Winehouse had been working on her highly anticipated follow-up to 2006, Back to Black, for the past three years and in June, cancelled her European tour after stumbling on stage, in a disastorous state to perform before an audience in Belgrade, Serbia. It’s sad that after four stints in rehab and brutual public redicule for drug and alcohol abuse, that Amy couldn’t shake the dirty habit that allegedly took her life. Winehouse’s ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, former music video producer, is said to have introduced the star to heroine and crack cocaine. The two divorced in September 2009 and last month Fielder-Civil was sentenced to 32 months in prison for bulguarly and possession of an imitation firearm.
Amy Winehouse is the latest member of the ’27 Club’ inclusive of iconic musicians who’ve all died at the same age. Kurt Cobain, committed suicide in 1994 and battled with a heroine and valium addiction. Jimi Hendrix chocked to death in 1970 after mixing sleeping pills and wine and Janis Joplin died the same year from a suspected heroine overdose.
Let’s celebrate the prolific songstress and always remember her unparalleled contribution to music and style. Back to Black and Frank will remain in heavy rotation. Amy Jade Winehouse of Southgate, London, you will be truly missed.
