It seems like Azealia Banks may have just torn her designer pants with her core fan base and the fashion industry. She’s been engaged in a Twitter beef with upcoming rapper and new fashion doll Angel Haze. The two traded insults with each rap track turning more venomous with every bar. Angel called Azealia after of rap tracks turned even more venomous when Angel took shots at Azealia’s skin tone. This brand of vitriol couldn’t write itself. Twitter seemed to call each rap round in Angel’s favor, and Perez Hilton seemed to lend his support to Angel, and got caught in the crossfire. The feud escalated Friday night when Azealia called Perez Hilton a “messy f****t.” Yikes: Not only did her comment enrage her fan base, but her lack of empathy and understanding let them down. For an upcoming artist, that kind of a wound doesn’t repair easily.
Azealia did eventually apologize, but her explanation for using the hateful term didn’t do much to assuage the fire: “A f—-t is not a homosexual male. A f—-t is any male who acts like a female. There’s a BIG difference.”
But the apology hasn’t been accepted. GLAAD replied to Azealia about her comment over the weekend:
“@AZEALIABANKS Are you open to hearing from young #LGBT people & fans who have been hurt by slurs & comments like yours? ‘F—-t’ is an ugly, archaic word that was used to stigmatize a population of people who suffer high rates of violence both here in the U.S. and abroad.”
It’s hard to know just how the fallout will end up, but with this event so fresh in everyone’s minds, it’s hard to believe that there will be no ramifications to Azealia’s huge fashion “It” girl pass. By insulting one, she’s insulted some of the industry’s biggest leaders. Do you think she’ll still be able to keep her status as a fashion darling, or has her star faded before it even took flight?
