Really, Now: New Trend In Nigeria Of Men Tattooing Their Lips Pink

The western world has contributed to a lot of beauty trends and phenomenons throughout the continent of Africa– some being positive, others not so much. One new fascination is the “Pink Lips” trend, booming in Nigeria. For a mere $30, men have been heading–in flocks– to tattoo parlors to have their bottom lips made pink or red. In the video below, the shop owner claims that they get around ten customers a day looking to get the procedure. “We help out those with black lips, to clean their lips and make them pink,” said the tattoo artist.

Whenever a beauty procedure is created to change the natural makeup of oneself to something more “appealing” (aka European), we have to questions the real motives. Obviously this is controversial and very permanent procedure, so we’d love to know your thoughts.

    I live in nigeria and this post is fishy! I’ve never seen nor heard of it! Nigerian men are very traditional,I doubt they could do this. Till I see it in real life before I believe

    As if tatooing the body isn’t bad enough, people are now tatooing the eyeballs, tatooing hair, hairlines and beards and now the lips and of all colors pink and they’re men?! What are they going to do when it’s no longer the trend? Pay a lot of money to remove the tatoo and even worse, what if he can’t afford to get it removed? If I were them, I’d think twice about doing that.

    What is appealing about this? Your face is brown so what’s wrong with having brown lips? I know I love mine. I’ve had people tell me they think I have on lipstick when I don’t. It’s not something that bothered me before but when I was told that I became proud of them.

    Also how long is that going to last? It’s hard to tattoo a color like this on darker skin that will last long.
