Celebrities are always checking into rehab for something: drugs, alcohol and other addictions. We applaud their efforts in proactively getting their lives back on track, but there’s one type of rehab that celebs always overlook: reputation rehab. Many celebs could use an overhaul of their public image, yet few take the time to actually do so. As you’ll see, style isn’t the only thing that needs a makeover.
Check out this list of celebrities who need to rehabilitate their image.
While many feel contempt for Chris Brown, we can’t help but feel bad for the guy. Since his return to the public eye after the Rihanna beating scandal of 2009 the singer can do no right. His poor decision making seems deliberate, as though he’s intentionally becoming the villain everybody thinks he is. A heavily tattooed Brown appears sullen and angry just about all the time. Instead of engaging every negative comment, fight, and Twitter beef that came his way, we wish Chris had just taken the high-road and ignored it. He’d probably be much better off.

Mayer previously suffered from two image debilitating diseases: douche bag syndrome and diarrhea of the mouth, both of which got him into a lot of hot water with the public. His reputation as an arrogant, womanizing jerk is not one he seemed too happy with when he decided to take a break from the spotlight for a few years. Mayer says the backlash for his lapses in judgement woke him up and rocketed him into adulthood. Let’s hope so, John. Let’s hope so.

Lindsay Lohan is like the premise of Final Destination, only backwards. She can forsee what will happen when she makes bad decisions but she won’t do a thing to change it! Lindsay’s image and career are just a mess. Multiple DUI’s, drug use, jail time, missed court dates, bad lip injections, wild partying… LiLo is in desperate need of a hiatus so she can pull herself together and focus on her acting career. Oh, the Disney days!
The middle Kardashian girl has developed a reputation for being a ditz, and her valley girl voice isn’t helping her case any. The public seems to think Kim’s not too bright which is a shame because she’s actually a lot smarter than she appears. The reality star defended herself against actor Jon Hamm’s remarks—one of many celebs who have insinuated her stupidity—saying: “Calling someone who runs their own businesses, is a part of a successful TV show, produces, writes, designs, and creates, ‘stupid,’ is in my opinion careless.” True, but you know what’s also careless? Displaying every detail of your life on a TV show that makes you look like a dope.
The great Tom Cruise’s career and reputation were tragically undone by his creepy dedication to Scientology and a flamboyant display of love for now ex-wife Katie Holmes in 2005. People just didn’t know how to take the actor after that. Cruise suffered a loss of respect by the industry along with the viewing public, and became the butt of many jokes. While he hasn’t returned to the same massive popularity and acclaim he once had, he is slowly regaining the public’s respect while redirecting the focus back to his acting career.
Bobby Brown’s music career and image has been in shambles for years thanks to a not so low key drug addiction and the public’s perception of him being the cause of late ex-wife Whitney Houston’s demise. The world believed that Brown pulled her down to the slums of substance abuse, tainting her squeaky clean image. In the wake of Whitney’s death he couldn’t even grieve without facing ridicule, which is unfortunate because news has been reported that Houston was already experimenting with drugs prior to their union. No doubt Brown could use a little reputation rehab, and possibly the other kind of rehab as well.
If Charlie Sheen’s goal was to make everyone think he’s a belligerent, drug-fueled lunatic, then he has succeed with flying colors. His public criticism of Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre and his co-stars while he was still on the show, followed by his bizarre behavior, withstatements like: “I got tiger blood,” continued drug use, and violent relationships with his ex-wives have made Sheen something of caricature of his former self.
A long history of alcoholism that had plagued Gibson throughout his life seemed to overtake him in 2006 amid an unwanted divorce initiated by his wife of over 25 years. The actor/director was arrested for driving under the influence with an open bottle of liquor in the car. During this arrest Gibson famously blamed the Jews for all the wars in the world and positioned himself as a belligerent, racist lush in the eyes of many people. That image was further perpetuated by more drunken incidents, arrest and violent outbursts recorded in the public forum. A sad state of affairs for an acclaimed actor and director.
The third member of Destiny’s Child needs an image makeover in so much as she doesn’t really seem to have one. In Hollywood that might be a good thing. We don’t count it against her. We just wish she’d show some pizazz, let her personality shine through, and prove to the world that her presence in Destiny’s Child wasn’t simply to allow the group to do Charlie’s Angel poses.
The Princess of Pop is not so revered these days, with her royal highness replaced by a sluggish and jaded clone à la the effects of Hollywood. Her majestic dance moves are traded in for half-hearted steps on stage. A trashier, colder, more bitter Britney is seen today, and with all she’s been through it’s understandable. But darn it, we just wish she’d let it go and get back on her royal throne!
With her remarks against the acting opportunities—Knocked Up and Grey’s Anatomy— that put her on the map and her sassy attitude, Katherine Heigl has regrettably painted a very snooty and ungrateful picture of herself in the media. It’s a picture she’s none too proud of. The actress expressed her disappointment in herself for allowing this perception of her to persist and told Entertainment Weekly: “There’s nothing more gross than [the idea of] somebody in my position being ungrateful… And I hope that in the coming years I can change people’s minds about that.”
Being famous for “being famous” quickly turned into being famous for partying, promiscuity, drug use, dumb quotes, and DUI’s for Paris Hilton. The socialite heiress to the Hilton fortune claims that there is much more to her than this image but has expended little energy in changing it. She appeared conservatively clothed and carrying a bible for a short time, but it came off more as a put on than genuine effort.
The public doesn’t seem to care too much about Megan Fox’s hot image. In fact, it’s what makes her who she is to most people, but that’s just the problem… to Fox, anyway. The brunette vixen has tried to distance herself from the scantily clad image she allowed herself to take on early in her acting career. Now that she is a mommy, Megan wants to set a better example for her child. The problem is that the public is not taking her seriously.
A veteran of Spike Lee films, Isaiah Washington enjoyed quite a successful career until he made an ill-thought out remark involving the word “fa–ot” on the set of Grey’s Anatomy in 2007. Reports circulated that Washington had used the word in reference to his co-star TR Knight, who was gay, though at the time had not come out publicly until after this incident. Washington received mass criticism for being “homophobic” by both the media and co-stars. The actor apologized for his words but was later released from Grey’s Anatomy. He has done little to no acting work since then.
Mariah Carey has one of the most larger-than-life personas in the entertainment industry, an image cultivated by her extreme diva-like behavior. She may be the most successful female artist of all time, but for all her success she is entirely unrelatable and a tad out of touch. It would be a refreshing change of pace to see her act like a normal human being.
