Video Rewind: Kendrick Lamar Chooses Brown Leading Lady To Represent All Shades Of Beauty In “Poetic Justice”

These days, it seems like absolutely everyone is feeling Kendrick Lamar, and with very good reason. His debut album, good kid m.A.A.d city is about as big of a critical smash as it can be. Not to mention, he blazed a lasting impression on the mainstream with his saxophone-assisted SNL performance.  And although there was much anticipation for a Janet Jackson cameo, his “Poetic Justice” clip has lived up to the buzz.

The visuals tell the tale of a budding love story cut down violently in Compton. Kendrick’s leading lady, Brittany Sky is a stunning beauty in ’90s flannel and a high bun. In an interview with Miss Info, he explains why he fired his original female lead, and plucked Brittany out of the cast of  extras:

“We had another girl for the lead, but I had an idea where I just wanted a little bit of a darker tone [girl] in the video. It’s almost like a colorblind industry where there’s only one type of appeal to the camera … I always kept in the back of my mine, like, ‘you don’t ever see this tone of a woman in videos.’ No disrespect, I love all women. Period. But at the same time, I still feel like it needs that balance.”

With immense talent, and a refreshingly inclusive outlook on beauty, has caught us.
