Just when we thought she was turning back into a human **in AT&T little girl voice** Nicki Minaj has decided to dress like a Barbie again– but just for the cover look. The “American Idol” judge was photographed by Sebastian Kim for Teen Vogue’s June/July issue and talks about her experience growing up in Jamaica Queens.
From constantly moving with her mother as a child to being teased for having confidence, the interview actually explains a lot about the fearless attitude she has today. Often criticized for that exact attitude, the interviewer seemed pleasantly surprised by Nicki in person.
On the process of making music: “Once I hear music that moves me, it [the songs] sort of like write themselves. I just can feel it and in five minutes, I have a story to tell.”
On her personal style: “My personal style is euphoric, girlie and powerful.”
On her early school days: “I encountered jealous girls a lot—it wasn’t like I had nice clothes, so they couldn’t be envious of that, but they were like, ‘You shouldn’t be that confident.’ Sometimes, if I felt like there was a physical threat, I would call my older brother and say, ‘Can you meet me after school because I don’t know what might happen?'”
Make sure to pick up the issue on newsstands May 21 and watch her and Lil Wayne perform at the Billboard Music Awards this weekend.
