SB Exclusive: Fashion Tips From Celebrity Stylist Eric Daman

Eric Daman isn’t just a celebrity stylist- he’s also an Emmy Award-winning costume designer and he’s worked on many notable TV shows where the fashion took center stage such as Sex and the City and Gossip Girl. On top of his impressive resume, he recently became the style ambassador for NYC-based fashion retailer Century 21. We chatted with Eric about everything from his creative process when dressing a character to the one must-have item every woman should have in her closet.

You are Century 21’s new style ambassador. What are your plans for the brand?

It is a classic NYC shopping destination must! It is an honor and privilege to partner with them at such an exciting point in their evolution. From the recent renovations to the extended locations, Century 21’s growth and continued commitment to their customer is an experience I am proud to be a part of. Through social media-platforms and their e-commerce site,, I intend to offer consumer tips, curate collections and give insider info on trends and how to wear them. I will be hosting in store and online events as well as a shopping spree for a lucky contest winner!

When you are dressing an actor/actress for a show, where does your creative process begin?

It usually starts with the script and its description of the character from there I launch into image research to generate mood boards depicting inspirational and aspirational qualities of the character. It can be anything from a vintage perfume ad, a work of art, a fashion editorial to actual images of the actor, really anything I come across surfing the net, watching a film or spending time in the library. It is important to keep an open mind and a wide eye.

Who has been your favorite character to design for? And what was the character’s best outfit?

I get asked this a lot and it’s a hard one because it’s like asking a parent to pick a favorite child- each one is special and held dear to me. I do love the Gossip Girl finale episode and Blair and Serena’s wedding outfits in that are on my top list, as well as The Carrie Diaries’ Carrie Bradshaw in the pilot in her fuchsia and black polka dot Arnold Scaasi party dress, an 80’s original!

Who do you think is the best dressed celebrity currently?

Michelle Obama.

What do you think every woman needs in her closet?

A great white menswear inspired shirt. It’s easy and effortless. You can dress it up, dress it down, take it to brunch or out on the town.

Which trends do you love for summer and fall? Also, how does a woman know when she should and should not try a trend?

For summer, I am feeling the sunburst vitamin-C inspired orange rage so I am inspired to see blazes of this hot hue heating up the sidewalks. It’s perfect as an added punch in the way of a shoe or bag to brighten the black and white colorblock craze that I also love. Trying a trend is always fun. Just go easy and start small with an accessory or if it’s a color trend , as a nail polish statement. Don’t go all out trend crazy, a little goes a long way.
