Every so often a touring artists's backstage demands are revealed, and every year we're amazed at the ridiculous requests some of stars call for. Granted, it's not easy being on the road six months to a year at a time, but 50 white kittens and 50 doves? Really, Mariah Carey? Sometimes the requests happen to be trivial (Rihanna demands lots of candy) but most of the time the request are brow-raising (wait until you see Marilyn Manson's demand). 80's rock band Van Halen kicked off the trend– initially a "test" to see if promoters actually read their lengthy requests and demanded the rider be stocked with M&M's, except for the brown ones. If that's the trend among touring artists, seems like the Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Kanye West are following suit with wacky and ridiculous stipulations for their tour entrourage! Check out 15 celebrities with diva backstage demands below.
A source who claims to be close to or involved with the Mrs. Carter World Tour alleges Bey and her troop use $900 Titanium straws to sip alkaline water warmed to 69.8° F. Mrs. Carter calls for hand-carved ice balls and as for toiletries? Red for after her show, and toilet paper is a must. Red paper? Titanium straws? Really, Beyonce?
During M.I.A's world tour, Roc Nation's bad girl required three women between 20-25 with the same height and body type to dance in "full covered Burkas" backstage. The women had to also have stage presence and could 'groove to the music'.
Jennifer Lopez has long forgotten her "Love don't cost a thing' mantra- her tour rider demands a 40-foot trailer be furnished in all white including flowers, tablecloths, candles, drapery and couches. Still "Jenny from the block"? We think not!
Kanye West keeps his rider request at a minimum, but just as you'd guess the requests are absolutely ridiculous. The rapper only calls for imported and recut Versace towels requirement, and he also demands that any chauffeur who drives him wear only 100 percent cotton clothes.
Katy Perry also has a 23-point "principle driver policy" that bans tour bus drivers from speaking to the singer and her touring entourage. Also, they can't look at her. According to her rider request, drivers are "directed not to stare at the backseat through the rearview mirror." Someone must have had a photo-op hungry driver in the past.
Apparently, Prince is a huge germophobe; although all items are shipped brand new for the Purple One, he also demands that everything in his dressing room be covered by clear plastic wrap until uncovered by the "main artist."
In the dictionary under Diva, a photo of Mariah Carey is undoubtedly beside the definition. So we're not surprised that Mimi would demand to be greeted with two dozen white roses, vanilla aromatherapy candles and a living room space decorated in pink - we are however side-eying her request for 20 white kittens and 100 doves.
Busta Rhymes's tour rider is sweet and simple, give the man Moet champagne, a bucket of KFC and ribbed condoms and he's A-OK. We'll commend Busta for keeping his tour rider minimal, but we'll have to question his method of impressing ladies he meets on tour.
Will Ferrell takes the title as most bizarre request (albeit it's likely a joke.) For his comedy tour for "Semi-Pro," the funnyman requested an electric scooter with a painted rainbow on the wheels and a 15-foot-tall fake tree.
Ozzy Osbourne's rider is far from the rated R rider it used to be. The rockstar requests his bus be equipped with an ears, nose and throat doctor, plenty of fire extinguishers and three tanks of oxygen.
Hands down the creepiest demand comes from Marilyn Manson. Are you shocked? You shouldn't be. Along with an oxygen tank and absinth is a request for a bald-headed toothless street worker. Here's hoping this is a total joke.
As for the Priestess of Pop may top Mariah Carey when it comes to diva-like rider demands. Madge requests a 200-person entourage including 30 bodyguards, a yoga instructor, personal chefs, an acupuncturist and on-site dry cleaning. She also likes to make her bus "homey", and demands items from her own be shipped to her on the road. In addition to that, Madonna's rider is equipped with 20 international phone lines, lilies and white and pink roses that have stems trimmed to approximately six inches.
Along with a mannequin with puffy pink pubic hair, Mother Monster demands vintage posters of David Bowie, Queen, Elton John and Billie Holiday. She's also gaga for juices–also included in her rider is an entire smoothie station.
While Cher's on tour, the pop legend needs an entire room just for her collection wigs. We're guessing things can get hairy when her locks are let loose.
Britney Spears' tour bus and backstage requests may just be the strangest. During her last tour Spears requested the venue hook her backstage up with McDonald's burgers sans the buns, 100 fig and prunes as well as fish and chips. As for decor, Spears kept it minimal (albeit odd) and opted for a framed photo of Princess Diana.
