A lot of wonderful things happened in 1928 including the world’s first color television transmission and the Hoover Dam breaking ground. But one for the fashion records is the founding of Cole Haan in Chicago, IL. As a way to celebrate their eight decades of excellence, the brand is debuting their “Born in 1928″ campaign that features other greats born in the same year.
Shot at Pier 59 in NYC, the photos feature photographer, Elliott Erwitt; astronaut Jim Lovell and renowned poet, Maya Angelou. “They are all vibrant examples of how timelessness and true style are born out of confidence — and that never expires,” Erin Riley, the vice president of marketing for Cole Haan told WWD. “They are as relevant today as they were in the past, and they all represent various perspectives that we thought would resonate with our consumer.”
The campaign comes on the heels of the company being sold by Nike Inc to Apax Partners, a private equity firm. As a way to be clear about the direction of their brand, they kept to a simple black and white aesthetic styled by Tiina Laakkonen. And for Angelou, this isn’t the first time she’s modeled, having posed as a dancer in the late 40s.
The campaign is set to launch Sept.3 initially on ColeHaan.com and their social media verticals, and then in print and billboard form.
