The essence of “grunge” is going against the grain, trying something obscure and owning it. For Tess Giberson’s Spring 2014 show, the designer wanted to convey that expression in the makeup and nails of the models. Using Shiseido and Jin Soon products her team did this… unconventionally.
Instead of applying a base foundation to the fresh-faced models, lead makeup artist DickPage left the ladies clean and went straight to the blush, eye and lip application. He smudged Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color in “Nightfall” as a liner (heavily on the bottom lid) and Benefiance Full Correction Lip Treatment above for a “lived-in” look. Shiseido’s Lacquer Rouge (lipstick!) in “Sunburn” was applied to cheeks for a subtle long-night-out look and Perfect Rouge in “Vision” (found here) was applied to the lips.
Manhattan-based nail artist, Jin Soon Choi worked with Page to conceptualize a distressed manicure for the girls. “I’m glad we had this color [in her new polish collection], because it has some shimmer in it, which makes it interesting,” Choi said. “If you have just black it would look more Gothic, but because of the specks, it’s more feminine and yet strong at the same time.” Choi applied Jin Soon “Obsidian” nail color (found here), then wiped it off with a sponge before drying.
The result? A runway filled with thoughtful, contemporary pieces for the grunge girl.
