French designer Jean Paul Gaultier has been blurring lines way before Robin Thicke sang the tune. Gaultier’s edgy yet feminine take on fashion has created bold trends for the several decades. And now some of his most iconic pieces will be on display at the Brooklyn Museum.
The Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit, entitled “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk,” will run through February 23 and features 150 pieces that includes a glittery jumpsuit worn by Beyonce, and the original cone-bra bustiers and bare-breast suspenders worn by Madonna.
As his longtime muse, Gaultier feels Madonna’s approach to fashion has inspired other artists like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus , “Madonna opened the doors and when you open doors, you have followers,” he said to WWD. “They were educated by her. Like me, maybe, if there were no Chanel, no Saint Laurent, no Cardin, I wouldn’t be doing the clothes that I do. Madonna was very much ahead of her time.”
