America’s pop sweetheart Katy Perry is waging a technicolor-ed assault this fall to promote her new album and her new, more mature, outlook on life. Her latest hit comes in the form of W’s November cover, which features the “Roar” singer looking positively sex-kittenish with her raven-color bouffant and signature ample cleavage on display for the world to see.
As the face of the mag’s global issue, W makes a strong case for Katy’s international appeal–itself an undeniable asset to her career. A true musician, her music and her message transcends language barriers and geographic barriers, alike. In the cover story, Katy delves into her inspirations, her loves (John Mayer), and more. Take a peek at some of the best tidbits below, and head over to W for the whole story and all the pictures.
On Prism’s debut single, “Roar”: “This song is about sticking up for yourself. People talk about bullying, but you can be your own bully in some ways. You can be the person who is standing in the way of your success, and that was the case for me. I was having a great professional streak, but personally, I was really immature, so I had to balance those things out.”
On growing up in Santa Barbara: ” I felt a little trapped on an island—my family isn’t well-off, and it was kind of tough to be hanging out with the millionaire families that live there. I always made do—if I had five dollars, I’d go to the thrift stores on State Street and get my vintage cardigans and pencil skirts. Thank God for the body, because that ’40s look really worked on me.”
On religion: “I try and keep my connection with the G-O-D or with a power that’s bigger than me. It’s important—otherwise, you don’t have any kind of accountability.”
On cinematic crushes: “I actually am dating my crush. I had a crush on him for a long time, and it just so happens we fit together great.” [Editor's note: Awww.]
