The 2013 Word Of The Year Is Selfie, Celebrities Are All Over It

Selfie Is The Word Of The Year: Celebrate With The Best Celebrity Selfies

Well, we probably should have seen this coming: The Oxford English Dictionary’s word of the year is none other than “selfie.” Whether you hate it or love it, selfie culture has blown up over the past year as more and more celebrities have jumped on the Instagram bandwagon and started clicking away and cell phone usage has spread in general (we’re talking about you 4th graders with pink iPhone 5cs). Even politicans are getting in on the action–Bill Clinton seflied this year, and we all know about Carlos Danger-woops, Anthony Weiner–and his selfie habit.

But if you’re one of the 9 percent of Americans who don’t own a cell phone, OED defines selfie as “(n.) a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.” TIME reports that selfie won the coveted title this year due to the fact that its usage went up 17,00 percent since 2012. This uptick hasn’t been enough to add the word to the actual Oxford English Dictionary, but the editors did decide to place it in the online version–it has fewer barriers to entry.

Runners up to the Word of the Year include twerk and binge-watching. We’re pretty sure we don’t need to define those for you.

In order to celebrate the Year of the Selfie, we thought we’d take a look back at some recent celebrity selfies from 2013. From silly to pretty to Miley just being Miley–we’ve got it all.

Ppl need to cut back in the selfies. I really don’t know when everybody became so self absorbed and narcissistic. Its riduculos and needs to stop. Especially with grown folks. I am happy to report that I habe never taken a selfie.
