For those out there unfamiliar with the above gentleman, allow us to introduce you Brad Smith, wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles, Men’s Health intern, and one of the 25 best-dressed athletes, according to Complex Magazine. Brad’s interest in fashion goes beyond just the blazer–he wants to learn as much as he can about the fashion industry and create a “cleats meets runway” movement. (More footballers in fashion? Welcome, gentleman. Come one come all.) As such, he’s currently hosting a design competition to help worthy emerging design talent get recognition at the 2014 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.
The contest–Design for Brad Smith–asks emerging U.S. designers to submit a hand-drawn or digitally created sketch of a red carpet ready look for Brad to wearing during MBFW. Brad will choose the winning submission with the help of a panel of fashion industry insiders, and the look will be created in time for Brad to wear it during Fashion Week at key events.
Brad’s message about the contest is as follows, “I understand the focus, raw talent, passion, drive, excellence and work ethic required to break into the world of fashion. Now more than ever, big dollars of the large apparel brands is King – while small brands and new talent find it more and more difficult to get a foothold. This competition was created to give someone a chance, just as others believed in me and gave me shot. I can’t wait to see what you create.”
Interested designers, take note: Brad does not want to see wild color, fur, or ascots. He did, however, tell Men’s Health what he’s looking for: “I’d tell the participants to keep it simple. I like clean, classic lines, with a bit of an edge.”
Think you can design the winning outfit? If so you’ll receive a cash prize of $2,500, and an all expenses paid trip to NYC to accompany Brad on the red carpet, attend a fashion week show, meet with the press, and network with fashion notables during the visit. You’ll also get to attend an exclusive party Brad hosts at The Strand NYC Hotel.
