Balmain is one of the rockstar runways of Paris Fashion Week, so we’re always anticipating this show for Olivier Rousteing’s edgy perspective. For fall 2014 he took us to the wild. His models were on the hunt, clad in tough, leather pieces with cargo pocket details. Other aspects of the collection referenced distant cultures with laid-style roping on designs, latticed leather construction, and stacked ring chokers. Naturally, animal prints popped up, but there were more surprises like the Roman gladiator battle-esque skirts. The creative jumps across time and space were also visible in the 90s gold bamboo hoop earrings and oversized, power-suit proportions. The collection was intended to be a message of freedom and globalism, but clearly it’s the kind that historical conquerors of land and culture like the adventurous Ibn Battuta or boisterous NWA made famous.
