We’ve got some sad news today concerning one of our favorite websites: NBC Universal has decided to shut down the popular local recommendations turned fashion and lifestyle website DailyCandy, which has been a web staple in the industry since it was founded 14 years ago. As of April 4, DailyCandy and another NBC Universal-owned property Television Without Pity will go dark and their will be archives cleared off the web.
The closing stems from a problem NBCU was having with monetizing the property, reports re/code, because there wasn’t enough web traffic–an issue all websites try to conquer on a daily basis. Unfortunately this leaves almost 70 people without jobs–64 at DailyCandy and three at TWP.
NBCU released the following statement about the decision:
“DailyCandy and Television Without Pity were groundbreaking businesses when they launched more than a decade ago, and the teams there have done great work creating unique voices in the digital space. However, as NBCUniversal continues to evolve, the decision was made that DailyCandy and Television Without Pity are no longer viable businesses for our company. Effective April 4, DailyCandy and Television Without Pity will cease all operations.”
And DailyCandy posted this message across its social networks: “Good-byes are never easy. After 14 years of bringing you the best, we will close our doors on 4/4. Thanks for the memories. Xoxo”
We’re miss the DailyCandy Weekend Guides, but we wish the best of luck to the staff as they continue on with their careers in new places.
