In the same vein of Kate Spade and Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters is branching out to create a lifestyle store– with its first location in NYC’s famous Herald Square.
The concept is to offer more than just clothing and accessories, showing the breath of their design abilities. Online the currently sell housewares and beauty products. The only issues is, New Yorkers are concerned it’s adding to the Mall-ification of the city. With chain brands opening up by the dozens every year, the new UO adds to the tourist-friendly shopping experience.
What’s interesting is that UO has not had a strong year in sales, but its subsidiary brands (like the aforementioned Anthropologie) have. The new store may be a signal of a changing plan to appeal to the same type of shopper.
“I am pleased to announce record URBN first quarter sales driven by strong performances at both the Anthropologie and Free People brands,” said Richard A. Hayne, Chief Executive Officer in their first quarter sales report. “While Anthropologie and Free People continue to deliver record levels in sales and profits, Urban Outfitters had a disappointing quarter and is working diligently to regain its fashion footing.”
We’ll see how they step into this new venture.
