When we first learned that Lifetime was creating a biopic on Whitney Houston’s life and that Angela Bassett would be making her directorial debut with the film, we instantly
wondered who would play the legendary singer.
According to TV Line, model and actress Yaya DaCosta has been cast to play the iconic role of Whitney Houston in the film that will come out in 2015. DaCosta, who was the runner up in Cycle 3 of “America’s Next Top Model,” has appeared on “All My Children,” “Ugly Betty” and “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” but this will be her biggest role to date.
Now does Yaya have what it takes to play Whitney Houston? Only time will tell but our prediction is yes if the ever-talented Bassett gave her the green light.
The first photos of Yaya DaCosta as Whitney Houston were released last week, and now anticipating fans can see her with”Bobby Brown.” Playing the role of the late singer’s husband is Arlen Escarpeta, an actor who’s been in “The Shield,” “Judging Amy,” “Boomtown,” “ER” and “Cold Case.” The two look happy in the photo but had a tumultuous marriage from 1992 to 2007. They had one daughter together, Bobbi Kristina.
“Whitney” is expected to focus mainly on Houston’s life in the early-to-mid ’90s, when she skyrocketed to fame, not only for her powerful singing voice but for her acting chops in the 1992 big-screen romantic drama “The Bodyguard.” Houston co-starred opposite Kevin Costner and was included on the movie’s soundtrack, which won a Grammy and is the biggest-selling soundtrack album in movie history.
She followed that up with a role (opposite Bassett) in “Waiting to Exhale,” which opened to critical and box-office success in 1995 and also launched a mega-selling soundtrack.
“Whitney” premieres on the Lifetime Network early 2015.
