Here’s Why Joan Smalls Wasn’t In The Diverse Balmain Ad

If you were wondering why Joan Smalls wasn’t cast in the beautifuly diverse Autumn-Winter 2015 Balmain campaign alongside fellow models of color Jourdan Dunn and Binx Watson, we’ve got a pretty good guess why. The leggy supermodel was cast as an iconic “Gucci Girl” in the brand new Fall-Winter 2014-2015 campaign for the Italian house.

Small is just one of seven supermodels cast in this new campaign that sought out models with strong runway cred. Gucci’s Creative Director Frida Giannini told Women’s Wear Daily, “With this campaign, I wanted to create modern, evocative portraits that epitomize the essence of the Gucci woman — individual, strong, sensual and glamorous.”

Clad in the season’s wares–a throwback to 70s-era glamour if we ever saw one–the models are shot against pastel backgrounds which allow the faces and the clothing to remain the points of attraction–and they’re more than worthy of the attention.

The extreme fur coats (read-bright and long-haired) and the leather staples–knee-high boots, a lovely leather shift–in this collection have us wishing for winter already. (Or maybe it’s the 90 degree temperatures outside.)
