From March until May of this year, former French Vogue Editor-in-Chief Carine Roitfeld was working on the biggest undertaking of her career so far–a portfolio of fashion icons for Harper’s Bazaar. Upon initially hearing of this project, it might sound par for the course, but for Roitfeld it was a dream come true.
“This is a portfolio I’ve been dreaming of wanting to do even over my 30 years in the business,” she said to Women’s Wear Daily. “You need a magazine that has big shoulders for such a project.”
Harper’s Bazaar’s big shoulders backed up Roitfeld and the huge amount of power they gave her for this shoot, which was an unusual amount of autonomy. For the story called, “Unmistakable, Unforgettable, Always in Fashion: Icons,” Roitfeld herself chose all 19 models, including Lady Gaga, Iman, Gigi Hadid, Joan Smalls, Cindy Crawford, Brook Shields, and more; picked the photographer; and styled the shoot, using fish net as her signature touch throughout.
As the magazine’s global fashion director, she’s previously worked on international projects and covers for various Harper’s around the world, but this marks the first time that a Roitfeld shoot will land on the U.S. edition of the magazine, and, in fact, she’s getting three–the one with Gaga above, one with Penelope Cruz, and another with Linda Evangelista.
The shoot features stunning portraits of each icon and she hopes it will help introduce the faces of fashion to people who might not be aware of the industry as much as we are in the states, specifically countries like Poland or the Ukraine.
