StyleBlazer Beauty: Natural Hair Takes the Fashion Industry by Storm (Is ‘White America’ Finally “Getting It”?)

We witnessed mainstream media take notice of natural hair and its beauty during award season when Viola Davis traded her wigs for a gorgeous natural ‘fro. But it seems to have gone beyond that.  According to a recent article by Vogue Italia—yes, the same magazine that brought you “Haute Mess”—natural hair was all the rage on the runways this season.

Apparently, designers are preferring the models to get rid of European weaves and come au naturale for the runways. With Solange Knowles becoming a sought after fashion darling, and all the other fashion forward natural girls like Esperanza Spalding, Janelle Monae, and Corinne Baily Rae, could White America finally be ready to embrace true diversity?  It is an answer that we will only see with time.

For now, enjoy the natural hair looks that graced the runways during f/w 2012′s fashion  weeks.

Who cares what “White America” gets, the question is do WE get it! Too many of us are the ones with issues surrounding “fitting in” (??) instead of claiming what’s naturally ours and making it all the rave!!

Thats one thing they cant copy from.. their hair wont go that route.. they will have to get a afro wig.. which i see them in a lot.. basically they are envious of whatever we do.. but they cant copy this afro style.. GOOD!

Its not about ‘them’ wanting to be ‘us’ but realizing we should wear our beautiful hair.  We all borrow from each other and that’s ok :)

They can… check the japanese salon… its basically the opposite of the brazilian blow out: kinky on order! lol

This is my first and last comment, and I’m sayin that we as a race shouldn’t look to others for self-satisfaction, we are beautiful people and we don’t need to seek solitude elsewhere, just from knowing that. I’m out

We dont care about white america “getting it”, personally not trying to impress them but to show love to US. WE need to get IT. How many times as a black woman with natural hair do you have to respond to “why is your hair so bushy? You should relax it! Let’s perm it now, it’ll be so much easier…” WE NEED TO GET IT!!!!!

  • Dedoe

they are now supposedly “giving us permission” letting us know it’s ok now this is the only reason it’s bringing so much attention

  • justme

Okay…why should black women have to find acceptance for something we are born with? Whether natural or chemically treated hair, black women should be able to do whatever we want. Its our hair… Right? Vogue does not decide my standard, I decide.

“Finally getting it” ??? Did you already forget that natural hair was mainstream back when everyone had afros?  Now everyone will have natural hair again.   Then, everyone will be back to perms and weaves.  Then everyone will be back to natural hair.  It’s called a TREND and it’s the media that creates it.  Around and around we go and you people keep following the trends and acting like the isht is really new.  Remember in The Wiz when they kept changing the color that everyone had to wear?  It’s the same thing in real life…we just go back and forth.  Please stop being so gullible…

  • Sliimsally

This is sooo true…I work with white people and they always comment me on my natural hair….on the other hand, blacks give me stares and laughs…go figure.
