Coco Rocha is adding fashion designer to her resume, and debuting her Cinderella clothing line inspired by modern royal Beyoncé.

Rocha, who is expecting her first child, did not let a little baby bump get in the way of her teaming up with HSN and Disney to release a clothing line to go along  with the live-action princess remake, but with a modern twist.

Her collection, which strays far away from Cinderella cliches such as blue tulle ballgowns and glass slippers motifs, includes leather jackets with butterfly embellishments, a formal black dress and her favorite pieces, the toile-patterned blazers and pants (seen in her Instagram pic below).

“The leather jackets people think are the farthest thing from princess ever, but I don’t believe that,” she said. “I think of our modern royals now, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Prince, and leather jackets are their staple go-to looks. So I thought that was appropriate in taking the two worlds together.”

Rocha did not just put her name on a clothing label, she was involved in the every aspect of the process, from picking the fabrics to using her own style philosophy when it came to putting the collection together.

“Definitely all of it is me. A lot of people have said this is ‘very Coco-esque.’ To the jacket to the embellishments to it being form-fitted, it is definitely all me. Once baby has come, I am excited to finally wear it.”

We met with Rocha at the Tribeca Grand Hotel to talk about her new clothing line, her maternity style and what the “Cinderella” story meant to her:

On the inspiration behind her ‘Cinderella’ collection: “We approached it thinking exactly that. It needed to be modern. You and I love Cinderella, and I am sure you were a Disney girl, too, but you wouldn’t necessarily leave the house in a ball gown. So how do you make the two worlds collide? I think we did a really good job. I love vintage shopping. That is my favorite thing because they have stories each piece that I buy. I ask where they came from, who wore it and so making this I wanted each piece to have some sort of story. The leather jackets people think are the farthest thing from princess ever, but I don’t believe that. I think of our modern royals now, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Prince, and leather jackets are their staple go-to looks. So I thought that was appropriate in taking the two worlds together.

On the use of the butterfly motif in her collection: “The butterfly, which I am sure you can see around the entire room, is definitely in the movie. It is perfect being that it is about transitioning, and that is the whole thing about the rags to riches Cinderella story, so we definitely wanted to do a homage to the butterfly.”

On what Cinderella means to her: “I think we all have that story. Me personally, coming from Canada being this Irish dancing nerd that no boy liked and the girls made fun of and then all of a sudden I got this opportunity from a man who said ‘Would you like to model?’ which was my fairy godmother moment and I think all of us have it. That is the modern princess. We all root for the underdog that is what the whole story of Cinderella. She was once the underdog and now she is on top. Everyone has that story, and it doesn’t mean it only happens once in your life. It can happen five or six times.”

On her maternity style: “For some reason, some people have this stereotype that once your pregnant you have to be in a bag. I don’t know what people expect of you. Your style shouldn’t change. It should just be improved. You get excited to get up in the morning and dress a bump. Im still in my heels, Im still wear the clothes I really like, and my style hasn’t changed. It’s just fun to style around it.”

On designing more in the future: “When HSN when they called me up and said ‘Would you like to do this?’ I was very flattered because there have been many times that I’ve wanted to do this in the past, but models are not taken so seriously. People just look at us and think our job is to just model and let the adults do what they do best. This was my princess moment, as cliché as it sounds, where they finally me gave that opportunity to have my opinion, to have a voice and show what I can do. This is all me. It is very exciting.”
