Say it ain’t so, say it ain’t so! When we first heard this we thought it was some sort of bad April Fool’s joke that came way too early but now it’s being widely reported. Apparently Marc by Marc Jacobs is about to suffer a fate similar to that of Kate Spade Saturday.
Now let us be clear: nothing is confirmed. We’re holding out hope that the recent appointment of Kate Hillier and Luella Bartley as creative director and women’s design director of the brand back in 2013 and the rebranding to MbMJ wasn’t so short lived and someone on the outside has their wires crossed. If they don’t though, we could soon see Marc by Marc Jacobs being folded into the mainline — as was done with D&G over at Dolce and Gabanna a few years ago and as is currently being done with Kate Spade Saturday and Kate Spade.
On the other end of this transition period will be a Marc Jacobs brand that ranges the gamut in price point, including what we’d come to expect from MbMJ, but just under one name. There’s no word on the retail spots — so either SoHo could be getting three new unoccupied shops where the Marc by Marc stores are now, or each store name might just lose one Marc — but we’re thinking things will get sussed out soon.
Until then we’re crossing our fingers that this is just fashion people being gossip-y fashion people.
