So About These Alexander Wang x Balenciaga Rumors…

This week, rumors about what’s going on at the couture house founded by Spanish couturier Cristobal Balenciaga seemed to cement when they were reported in industry trade journal WWD. According to the whispers, New York-based designer Alexander Wang is on the outs with the brand and the creative director work he’s done for them will come to an end with the conclusion of his contract which many think is only through the Spring 2016 collection which will be presented this Fall in Paris.

Gasp!

While we’re not saying it’s all a farce and hot air, when you work in fashion you quickly come to understand one thing: the sky is always presumed to be falling somewhere. In an industry practically predicated on flying a select group of people around the world to attend parties and sit front row at fashion shows, there’s bound to be a lot to talk about. And when there isn’t anything to actually talk about, sometimes things get made up.

The known facts are only this: spokespeople from both camps have confirmed that they are indeed in contract renewal conversations. Another relevant fact? Wang has been great business for the brand. Whether or not one agrees with the new cadre of celebs that dons its wares, one can’t deny the double-digit growth the label has experienced under Wang’s hand. Yes, the brand wants to expand menswear — which Wang isn’t exactly known for — as well as knitwear but those don’t seem like reasons to completely unseat him.

While it may be true that Alexander Wang is headed out of the brand it could also be true that these rumors are nothing but a negotiating tactic to throw one of the parties off base. Another plausible idea? Maybe a deal is being worked out like that of Nicolas Ghesquiere and Kim Jones or Raf Simons and Kris Van Assche at Louis Vuitton and Dior where another designer is brought in to man the menswear line. But the point is, we don’t know so why are we really even talking?

Instead of talking why don’t we take a look back at some of the celebrities who have chosen to wear Balenciaga by Alexander Wang since he was appointed to the position.
