There might be waiting lists, but Jane Birkin is not a fan of her eponymous bag, at least one of them.
The iconic British actress does not want to be associated with the crocodile version of her Hermès namesake.
Yahoo reported that Birkin asked for her name to be removed from the product, after PETA released a report about the “cruel” method used to make the bags.
“Having been alerted to the cruel practices reserved for crocodiles during their slaughter to make Hermes handbags carrying my name … I have asked Hermès to debaptise the Birkin Croco until better practices in line with international norms can be put in place,” Birkin said in a statement.
Well, Hermès has responded, but will they change the name of their iconic bag?
Not so fast. According to WWD, the brand was also appalled by PETA’s video, and will be launching an investigation of their own.
“Jane Birkin has expressed her concerns regarding practices for slaughtering crocodiles,” said Hermès International in a statement. “Her comments do not in any way influence the friendship and confidence that we have shared for many years. Hermès respects and shares her emotions and was also shocked by the images recently broadcast.
“Hermès imposes on its partners the highest standards in the ethical treatment of crocodiles.”
Seeing as the brand’s crocodile bags retail for hundreds of thousands of dollars, it is no surprise Hermes was not quick to obey Birkin’s request.
