Protective styling, a rather new term that has been thrown around since many women are opting to have natural hair these days and aren’t interested in submitting to relaxers anymore. Instead of letting the world see how their hair is transitioning, women are wearing full heads of weaves and wonder wigs to stay fly despite what is going on with their natural hair.

I assumed these celebs were rocking sew-ins. Guess I can’t tell the difference. Brandy’s hair has been niiiice as of late…that “It All Belongs To Me” video, man oh man point me to her stylist! And sometime Bey goes off the deep end with her mane, but 90% of the time, I’d steal her look, too.

You might be able to get away with a well maintained weave or sewin but no young men OF ANY RACE are going to go for their women wearing WIGS!

Why does one need a wig for a protective style? It’s safe to assume that women have different reasons to go natural. However, I figured the #1 reason would be to embrace who you were born as, not hide it under a wig.

This is not protective styling….this is simply wearing weave and wigs……!!! Until I see a article from Beyonce, Rhi and all the celebs stating what they do to look after and protect their natural hair I will not regard this as protective styling!….I doubt Beyonce plans to rock her natural hair when it reaches a certain length or condition! KMT its just wearing a weave!

It is not a coincidence that all of the women featured above are black. White women are seen as the standard of beauty in this culture and that is why most black women are reduced to covering of their hair with european texture. How come all of the wigs the women are putting on are straight? Why are they afro weaves? Why would beyonce be trying to protect her real hair when she has never even shown it? At this point, I don’t think we should be congratulating black women for “covering up their hair” when we are still dealing with racism and body image issues. The anxiety black women feel when showcasing their real hair or going natural is merely a confirmation that the issue is not just about hair, but racism.
