Say It Aint So! Study Shows Black Girls Do NOT Reap As Many Benefits From Exercise As Other Races (Read Up!)

A new study conducted by James White of Cardiff University and Russell Jago of The University of Bristol, found that black teenagers between the ages of 10-14 were not positively affected by physical activity as much as white teenagers. The study was done for the National Institute of Health who followed 1,148 girls of African-American and Caucasian descent from the time they were 10 years old, checking their height and weight again when they were twelve, and then again at fourteen. The study revealed that by the time the girls reached fourteen years old, 16% of the black girls were obese as opposed to just 5% of the white girls. The study also showed that the physical activity of both groups of girls did not vary much. Considering that both groups ate similarly, this study proves that black women are built differently than other race women and would have to apply different measures to their health.

Dr. Allison Field, who specializes in adolescent and women’s health at Harvard Medical School and Children’s Hospital in Boston says, “what we’ve been recommending [in regards to weight loss and obesity prevention] may not be the perfect fit for African-Americans.”  Black and Latina women have always been more curvaceous than white women from the beginning of time and those curvy frames have always stood out in the public eye, especially since Beyoncé’s and Jennifer Lopez’s rise to fame. Since this study proves that we are built differently, that means we have to eat and exercise differently to be healthy, but we must stop being compared to society’s standard of beauty at the same time.

Rush? What does that have to do with anything? Please stick to the topic.

its hard to lose weight when you jog to krispy kreme or eat twinkies while youre on a treadmill!

  • davedavidhicks0311@msn.com

    word!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hilarious.

  • Way to go. This obviously slanted crap will do EXACTLY what it’s designed for: provide red-meat for your readers who were already closet bigots to start with. I think some of the posts already demonstrate this.

  • Aranhas

More “curvaceous”? Give me a break. Sophia Loren was/is curvaceous. Beyonce has a monster bottom. To be curvaceous you have to have curves, not fat legs and bottoms.

  • Aranhas

    And your point is?

  • freecheese

. . . and what does that have to do with the price of a pack of M&Ms in Christchurch, New Zealand ?

  • oscarvalles

I wouldn’t give too much credence to this article, simply because it’s linking up a study done in the U.K. with commentary from a Harvard (U.S.) professor, which is likely not a reference to the U.K. study. This is a conclusion that was drawn by the author. Furthermore, it’s probably a study conducted by undergrads, who very likely did not have a controlled environment. So, I would say it is inconclusive. However, white, black, asian or hispanic, everyone should attempt to have a high ratio of vegetables in their diet, followed by smaller proportions of fruits, and whole grains and a lower intake of red meats and chicken. Lastly a minimal consumption of processed foods and SUGARS. Every race can obtain optimal health this way.

  • European America

Then why are so many black men running after them good looking slim white woman???

    • SoCute

      lol

  • European America

There are beautiful black and white woman. Take the racial percentage of each in this country 17% black, about 78 % white, the rest are oriental/hispanic? so that leaves me with a percentage of about 50% of the 17% of black woman are big, and 50% of the 78% ofwhite woman are big, sound like we are about equal to me. So lets just quit this crap and be brothers and sistes for a change, we all have to live on the same planet.

  • Alexxthegreat

This is very sad…But I would say that early eating habits are the key.

But…do you think anyone is going to changed what they stuff in their mouths…??

  • Nonsense. Everyone is exactly equal, if not it’s racism

  • pepjrp

I do appreciate your honesty in this comment.

A poke chop is Dixie Speak for pork chop, it is Southern way of speaking, a regional dialect different from the speech heard in Boston. Fat Flozella Watkins, who eats fo poke chops deep fried in pig fat, wif five biscuits and a mess of greens is what we are discussing here. Quit eatin this wayShameeka and you wont be weighin 400 pounds! Cmon folks! Let us get real! Aint no racism here, just reality das all!

  • btwall60

Uh, does this kinda sorta mean that everyone is not the same?

  • The Truth

Just tell the truth about what this no good, processed food is doing to us!! Far more than exercise, it’s the unwholesome, unnecessary GRAINS, GLUTENS, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP and other such junk that is resulting in obesity!! I wouldn’t be surprised if different races respond differently to these harmful ingredients. What this “study” shows me, is that Black kids are probably eating a somewhat lower quality diet than White kids, which is to be expected, since Blacks tend to be poorer economically overall.

  • Zimminger

Years ago, subjects in a study were told to record what they ate. They weren’t told the researchers were checking their cupboards and refrigerators. Whether intentional or not, the food diaries were significantly inaccurate. So the claim that both groups “ate similarly” and that their “physical activity…did not vary much” is highly suspect. Self reporting is notoriously inaccurate for both food intake and exercise.

    • Sweet63

Yup. and as I noted above, there are people (esp poor people) who think what they’re supposed to be doing is actually what they do, because that was their intent anyway. So they say they did the right thing to put themselves in the best light.

  • loganent

holding a big mac in each hand and diving for fries like bobbing for apples just dont get it when your trying to loose weight!

  • Must be jelly cause jam don`t shake like that.

Hyphenated Americans are the reason our Country is falling apart.

Too much self-segregation by family heritage instead of assimilation into the Country you call home.

If you don’t want to be an unhyphenated American, why do you stay here?

  • TexasJester

There’s one thing that’s never mentioned in all these studies about obesity: The link between fluoridated (city) tap water, low thyroid, and weight gain. Flouride replaces iodine in the human body, which triggers lower thyroid activity, which in turn prompts weight gain. I’d be willing to bet that if the thyroid levels in obese people were to be checked, they’d be low.

And different people have different food requirements. As someone with primarily Scots ancestry, my system performs better on meat n potatoes. Asians tend to do better with fish and rice. Black people need more protien – mostly meats – and very little starches. These kinds of foods are the types our ancestors have eaten for centuries, and we would all do well to figure that out and eat the types of foods that our ancestors have – it’s what we are genetically programmed to make the best use of. It’s not racism, it’s genetics!

We ARE all different. We have different genes, different minds, different abilities. It’s all in our genes.

  • marcellucci

    Betwen ages 10 & 14 ??? You could have 5 babies in that time……
That can’t be good for your weight……

  • jt williams

Oh please~! these people are over weight because they have unlimited food supplies and An opinion that I try to eat right but can’t. I figure that with all of the food stampers, it’s really easy!

  • jt williams

People actually worked hard in the 60’s 70’s and not so much in the 80’s and 90’s. People have been intoxicated with food. but no brain to see what’s going on.

  • Happy to find out the Daily Caller is so concerned about the health of Black women!

  • It has nothing to do with feeling better. However, with food deserts and economic disparities still in existence, socioeconomic status plays into weight more than race does. The articles doesn’t say anything in a concrete way in terms of the method. That’s a red flag right there.

    • The “food desert” concept has been radically debunked- however convenient a fantasy it was to explain poor nutrition choices, it is not an accurate reflection of reality.

      Fail.

  • GigiGirl

How did this article spawn such irrelevant comments? What does hyphenated descriptors have to do with obesity. I live in California and I am visiting Indiana. I have never seen such a cluster of obese Caucasians/Whites before. We are dying from eating too much, regardless of our political/ethnic/racial views. Blacks originated in Africa- it’s a fact no one can dispute. We all must eat healthier and exercise.

    • “we are dying from eating too much…”

We live longer than ever before in the history of mankind- I think you need to study the data a little more. Every single solitary person on this planet will die (yes, even vegans!)
We used to die of accidents, tuberculosis and childhood diseases- now we die (much later, on average) of other things. But hey, foam at the mouth about bad diets if you wish- just watch out for that stroke…

  • Ranger

Is this also true statement for white women? The number don’t lie. There are more whites on welfare than people of color. There are just simple more white people, for now.

  • I think you should be jailed for being a food Nazi. What a maroon!

  • A cookie is a cookie is a cookie.

  • He shouldn’t have been fired…now that weasel Imus should be fired.

  • Judy

The question is what kinds of foods are they buying with their food stamps? Are raw fruits and vegetables available at stores that take food stamps, or not? You can argue the merits of the food stamp concept if you like, but the nitty gritty is what can they buy with them, and do they have nutritionally sound choices available? If so, and tey’re not choosing those foods, then it’s irrelevant whether they’re on food stamps or not. They’re making the same bad food choices as most other Americans. on the other hand, if they cannot buy fresh produce with the food stamps, but only processed foods, then you might have a case for blaming the food stamps.

  • Judy

    Right!

  • John Johnson

    lol

  • Sweet63

Uh, it looks like the study was done in the UK.

  • Darn that really had the hurt all the (as Bill Maher puts it ) “Apes”

  • Ya forgot greasy and stinky

  • I Know jack

Can you say fried foods? Exercise has nothing to do with losing weight. People only lose weight when they eat healthy food. Lay off the junk food.

  • Yeah, but if someone asks you to describe yourself beyond simply a physical description of your skin color you can state that you are Scottish and English. Ask that question to a person of African ancestry who’s ancestors did not emigrate to this country of their own free will and they probably will not be able to tell you. That history was lost. It is about personal identity and trying to be recognized as a person beyond the color of your skin. Will/have you refused to tell your children where there ancestors hailed from? It’s irrelevant, correct? The arrogance of the ignorance posted here makes me sick.
